Stomata - Non Standards/Standards

With the release of Stomata’s first album, “Standards/Non Standards,” the trio fuses both Modern and Old School reinterpretations of the Jazz Era’s popular music. The album was recorded and mastered to tape at Milwaukee’s National Recording in the same style as the virtuosos who preceded them, keeping with the trio’s respect for tradition. Saxophonist Jay Anderson displays influences of John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Joe Henderson and Kamari Washington. Alongside John Simmons (Bass) and Dave Schoepke (Drum Set), both staples of the Milwaukee Music Scene, Anderson takes a confident step toward representing sublime moments in the history of tenor sax.

The freshman album spans stylistically from the hard swing of “There Will Never Be another You,” through an incendiary Afro-Cuban interpretation of “Softly as a Morning Sunrise.” The trio is even joined by DJ Madhatter for a tumultuous remix of “A Night in Tunisia” which splices the Dizzy Gillespie standard with distressed audio of disturbing news coverage from August 2016, when a riot began in the Sherman Park neighborhood. The 3 days of unrest were sparked by the fatal police shooting of 23-year-old Sylville Smith.
